Each year, student volunteers, alumni and members of our team work together to conduct the Avanti Fellow Search.
Many low-income students across India have little awareness about professional degrees, the route to college and what investing in this education entails. Our first step is to identify those students who have the talent to succeed but lack means. We look for students through:
- Partner NGOs
- Government schools
- Partner coaching classes
- Online applications
Our search is designed to identify students who have the ability to succeed, the support of their families and who come from households with an annual income of under Rs 2.5 lakh per year. It involves:
- Career awareness sessions in schools with large low-income student populations and other institutes
- Aptitude tests, which last year were taken by over 9,000 students from over 400 schools across India (4,000 took the tests in 2010-11 and 5,000 took the tests in 2011-12)
- Interviews at home with successful students and their families.
Since we began, over 220 students have been accepted as Avanti Fellows.
