In New Delhi currently 58 students are enrolled as Avanti Fellows, who are receiving one-on-one mentoring from IIT Delhi and Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) students and free classroom training to prepare for engineering and medical entrance examinations.
The Avanti Fellows Core Team (ACT) at IIT Delhi began operations in September 2010. The team at IIT Delhi currently coordinates mentorship for 46 Avanti Fellows preparing for engineering entrance exams in Delhi. These students are provided free 2-year classroom coaching for engineering entrance exams by Vidyamandir Classes & Educomp (Leap), and one-on-one mentoring by current students of IIT Delhi.
Avanti Fellows has partnership with the Directorate of Education in New Delhi, providing access to a large group of students studying in government schools. In 2011-12, volunteers from IIT Delhi and MAMC reached out to over 80 Government and private schools – Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalayas (RPVV), Sarvodaya Vidyalayas, DAV Schools, etc. to conduct career-guidance sessions for class X students and invite applications for the selection tests for Medical and Engineering stream. Avanti had also partnered with the DAV Management Committee to conduct tests across 15 DAV schools in Delhi. Overall, about 1500 students had appeared for our selection test in 2011-12, and 37 students were selected for the Fellowship program (23 for Engineering and 14 for Medical batch).
The team at IIT Delhi is in the process of selecting its next batch of Fellows for the academic year 2013-15.
