Peer Instruction Workshop with Prof. Eric Mazur

The Avanti Science Leadership Conference provides a platform to bring together exceptional school leaders (principals and teachers) with renowned education researchers to share and discuss best practices in science education. It is comprised of a series of workshops all year round and participation is by invite only.

Homepage-Slider-Collage-1“Peer Instruction” – The first of a series of our workshops on “Best Practices in Effective Science Education” was kicked off on 11th November 2013 by none other than the pioneer of peer instruction himself – Prof. Eric Mazur – in collaboration with the Department of Education Technology, IIT Bombay.

It was a 2-hour session attended by 70+ principals and teachers from affordable schools across Mumbai – – Sion, Dadar, Andheri, Chembur and more – as well as education researchers from IIT Bombay and Homi Bhabha Centre of Science Education.

The first half was an interactive session with Prof. Mazur where he spoke about about why he started using peer instruction in his class and how he implements it using ConcepTests.

In the second half the participants took part in an exercise to gauge the goodness of questions so as to test higher order thinking skills and thus better conceptual understanding of science.

We were blown away by the feedback, every single participant told us they would recommend such workshops to their colleagues and reported that they had significant learning gains from the workshop.

Some of the comments we received

” (Peer Instruction) is really required to be known to the teacher for today’s generation as children want to learn everything in limited time”

“It will help us make our classroom teaching more interesting. It will helpful to understand the concepts “

“Great thing to take away and very much applicable to classroom”

“Such workshops refresh & motivate for better teaching.”

“Lively, great speaker & relevant topic. Felt lucky to be a part of it.”
