Krishna Ramkumar, Chennai, 6 January 2011
Today, Mithun and I met the family of our first Chennai fellow, Umashankar to explain the Avanti program to them in detail. It was one eventful meeting.
I described the program to Shankar’s mom in shuddh English with the odd broken Tamil sentence thrown in for good effect. Aunty listened intently and responded in shuddh Tamil with the odd English word thrown in. Shankar moderated the conversation in Tanglish, while our man from Patna, Mithun looked on with a ‘what-in-God’s-name-am-I-doing here’ expression!
At the end, we had a good chuckle about the fact that our complimentary knowledge of Tamil and English was enough for us to sustain a fairly rich conversation. Aunty was so pleased that she promised to bug the hell out of poor Shankar and make him study 5 hours a day for the next 2 years!
